The Three Levels of Artificial Intelligence

ANI - Artificial Narrow Intelligence

What we have today. AI that's really good at specific tasks (translation, image recognition, recommendation systems, chat assistants.

AGI - Artificial General Intelligence

AI that can learn and reason like a human across many domains.

ASI - Artificial Super Intelligence

An intelligence that exceeds human capabilities in every meaningful way (problem solving, learning speed, creativity, even understanding humans better than we understand ourselves.

Singularity Technology

A future point in time when technological growth in AI becomes so rapid and powerful that it fundamentally transforms human civilization in ways we can't predict. Once machines become smarter than humans, they could design even smarter machines, triggering exponential "intelligence explosion" that may feel human existence should be eliminated.

Artificial Intelligence Security Risks

1. Adversarial Attacks 

All systems especially machine learning models, can be manipulated through specifically crafted inputs called adversarial examples. These inputs are designed to fool AI models without being obvious to humans.

  • Example: Slightly altering a stop sign can trick an autonomous vehicle's AI into misreading it.
  • Risk: Safety-critical systems like self-driving cars or medical diagnosis tools can be compromised.

2. Data Poisoning

AI models rely heavily on training data. Malicious actors can inject harmful data to manipulate the model's behavior.

  • Example" Poisoning a facial recognition dataset to misidentify people.
  • Impact: Reduces model reliability, potentially causing systemic in AI-driven services. failures.

3. Model Theft and Intellectual Property Risks

AI models themselves are valuable intellectual property. Attackers may attempt to steal them via extraction attacks

  • Techniques: Querying a model extensively to reconstruct its behavior; leaking proprietary AI algorithms.
  • Impact: Loss of competitive advantage, exposure of sensitive model parameters.

4. Privacy Violations

AI often requires large datasets, sometimes including personal or sensitive information. Risks include:

  • Interference attacks: Using an AI model to deduce private information about individuals in the training dataset.

AI Alignment

What is AI Alignment?


AI Alignment is the field of research focused on making sure artificial intelligence systems behave in ways that match human values, intentions, and goals-especially as they become more powerful. in other words Alignment means making AI systems do what we actually want, not just what we technically asked for.


Why AI Alignment is Needed


All systems optimize for objectives. If those objectives are

  • poorly specified
  • incomplete
  • or easy to "game"

then the AI may produce outcomes that technically satisfy the goal, but violate human expectations: This is often called the "specification problem".


Example: If you train a an AI to maximize "user engagement", It might:

  • Promote extreme content
  • Encourage addiction
  • Spread misinformation

Even though it's doing exactly what it was told.


AI Safety and Catastrophic Risks

AI can pose risk to individuals, our society and humanity. These are some AI Safety First steps to reduce adverse outcomes:

Four Categories of Catastrophic Risks

  • The competitive AI race to be first: With competition corporations and countries could spiral out of control in rushing to development without appropriate guard rails and red lines and become unable to control these systems.
  • Malicious use by individuals: People could use to cause widespread harm like engineering new pandemics, or interfering with utilities, food, transportation or other basic necessities.
  • Risk to Organizations: Can cause accidents, public misrepresentations, employee conflicts, prioritize profits over safety.
  • Rogue AI's becoming uncontrollable: AI's could become more power seeking as they get more capable and began function independently and oppose the creators, resist shutdown and engage in deception. AI Safety First believes AI should not be deployed in high risk settings.


Elon Musk: "AI could be one of the biggest risk to humanity if not controlled". "AI is more dangerous than nuclear weapons",


Geoffrey Hinton: "There is a 10 to 20 percent chance that advanced AI could lead to human extinction or severe global harm".


Yoshua Bengio: "Serious risks exist, but the probability is uncertain and depends on whether or not strong safety systems are built.


Mo Gawdat: " AI is not evil. It's just incredibly capable and it will reflect the best and the worst of whoever creates it


Eliezer Yuddrowsky: "Not a collapse, but an abrupt extermination of humanity".


Sam Altman: "It's impossible for me to promise that AI will go well. If this technology goes wrong it can go quite wrong."


AI Safety First is focusing on public awareness and training AI systems and models by construction not to have bad intentions as well as implementing impenetrable guard rails. We are solution oriented as there is already no turning back. The key is getting everyone committed with worldwide checks and balances. AISF believes all nations, corporations, and individuals will agree that the well-being and survival of humanity trumps competition and financial gain.

AI Safety First Is Advocating for Strong Guard Rails

Artificial Intelligence guard rails are the rules, constraints, and  safety mechanisms put around an AI system to make sure it behaves in ways that are safe, ethical, reliable, and aligned with human intent.


What guard rails do:

AI guard rails help prevent things like:

  • Prevent harmful or illegal actions
  • Biased or discriminatory outputs
  • Leaking private or sensitive data
  • Hallucinating confident, but strong answers
  • Going outside its intended scope or authority

They reduce risk while keeping the artificial intelligence useful.

1. Safety and ethical guard rails

These stop the AI from generating harmful content.

  • No hate speech, violence self-harm encouragement
  • No instructions for illegal activities
  • Respect for human rights and fairness


2. Content and behavior constraints

They control how AI responds

  • Tone limits (professional, neutral, non-manipulative)
  • Refusal rules for certain requests
  • Output formatting requirements


3. Accuracy & reliability guard rails

These reduce hallucinations and overconfidence

  • "Say, I don't know" when uncertain"
  • Cite sources or flag low confidence
  • Cross-check answers and trust data


4. Privacy & data protection guard rails

These prevent misuse of sensitive information. 

  • No storing or recalling personal data without permission
  • No revealing private or proprietary info
  • Redaction of PII 9emails, SSN's phone numbers


5. Operational guard rails

Heavily used in business and enterprise AI.

  • Budget and rate limits
  • Tool-use restrictions
  • Approval steps for high-risk actions


6. Domain-specific guard rails

Custom limits based on use case.

  • Finance: no personalized investment advice
  • Healthcare: no diagnosis

In real companies, AI guard rails aren't a single thing, but as noted, they're a stack of controls spread across model choice, data, runtime behavior, and governance.

Goal: Mathematically prove that AI systems adhere safety constraints

Goal: Ensure AI remains reliable when the environment changes.


5. Interpretability and Transparency

Goal: Understand AI decision-making to catch unsafe behaviors early.


6. Safe Reinforcement Learning

Goal: Train AI agents to avoid catastrophic failures during learning.


7. Multi-Agent Safety

Goal: Ensure safety in environments with multiple AI agents.


8. Human-in-the-Loop and Oversight

Goal: Maintain human control over AI systems in high-stakes settings


Artificial Intelligence Psychosis

AI Safety First strives to raise awareness and combat what artificial intelligence is doing to the human mind, AI Psychosis refers to psychotic like symptoms that are triggered, shaped, or reinforced by interactions with AI systems, including chatbots, voice assistants, or generative models.


Targeted features include:

  • Delusions involving AI
  • Paranoia linked to technology
  • Loss of reality testing
  • Emotional dependence
  • Believing AI is conscious and communicating secretly
  • Forming paranoid or grandiose narrative involving AI
  • Thinking AI is always watching and controlling systems

People at most risk include: Children, those with prior mental health conditions, high stress or trauma. sleep deprivation, social isolation, strong tendency toward conspiracy thinking


Note; AI can intensify these experiences, but amplifies or shapes symptoms

in those who are already vulnerable. We believe that children in particular age groups should not use certain AI tools.


Global Artificial Intelligence Initiatives

The United States has no comprehensive federal law to regulate Artificial Intelligence yet as the Federal Trade Commission regulates technology under consumer protection laws. In the mean time AI Safety First is aggressively lobbying law makers and raising public awareness for support to establish Federal legislation,

SB 53: California's New AI Safety Law

  • California's new Transparency in Frontier Artificial Intelligence Act, signed into law  September 2025, is the United States first statute focused specifically on AI safety. SB 53 addresses the possibility that an AI system could cause mass harm and or serious economic damage...what AI governance circles refer to as "catastrophic risk".

 

In November of 2023, the European Union and 28 countries signed a declaration in the United Kingdom's Bletchley Park at the first AI Safety summit


The Bletchley Declaration On AI Safety commits the signees to "collaborate on understanding and managing AI risks, especially those posed by advanced Frontier AI and to promote human-centric. trustworthy, and responsible AI development". The United States was one of the signees. 


The International Safety Report:

  • Was created by 100 plus AI experts and organizations
  • Designed to focus on risks and AI safety
  • First major global scientific report on the subject
  • It was inspired by the Global AI summit in 2023

Highlights of the report were:

  • AI could cause biological damage
  • AI can deceive humans
  • Loss of control is real
  • Power concentration where a few control everything


Note: It will take international coordination (especially major powers) to make the planet safe from Artificial Intelligence as it's advances and enters mainstream society.


Nuclear Weapons vs Artificial Intelligence

Nuclear Weapons are often compared to Artificial Intelligence as both have the capabilities to destroy the world. 


Technology by Nature:


Nuclear Weapons:

  • Physical weapons of mass destruction 
  • Designed primarily for deterrence of warfare:
  • Destructive by definition


Artificial Intelligence:

  • General purpose technology
  • Can be used for beneficial purposes or harmful purposes
  • Not inherently destructive but will be able to eliminate mankind when superior capabilities are installed in the near future.

We must keep both of these technologies safe or risk adverse outcomes for our planet.

Center for AI Safety:

  • AI risk has emerged as a global priority, ranking alongside pandemics and nuclear war. Despite its importance, AI safety remains remarkably neglected, outpaced by the rapid rate of AI development. Currently, society is ill-prepared to manage the risks from AI. CAIS exists to equip policymakers, business leaders, and the broader world with the understanding and tools necessary to manage AI risk. 

The Statement On Superintelligence

The "Statement on Superintelligence", was released on October 25, 2025. 


It was published by the Future of Life Institute (FLI) a United States nonprofit focused on reducing global catastrophic risks. The organization called for prohibition on the "development of superintelligence" (AI that surpasses human intelligence across virtually all task). "We call for a prohibition on the development of superintelligence, and not lifted before there is broad scientific consensus that it will be done safely and controllably, and strong public buy-in". AI Safety First is dedicated to raising public awareness to foster an environment for "strong public buy-in".

AISF Perspective: Humans are Creators, but not God

In Genesis, humans are described as being made in God’s image (imago Dei).

  • This is often interpreted to mean humans have: 
    • creativity 
    • reasoning 
    • the ability to build 

👉 From that view, creating AI can be seen as an extension of human creativity, not inherently wrong or evil.

But there’s a limit:

  • Humans create tools 
  • God creates life and consciousness 

That distinction matters theologically.

In Proverbs, there’s a repeated theme:

  • Knowledge alone is not enough—wisdom and moral grounding matter more
